The patrol system is one of the things that separates scouting from other youth development movements and is a fundamental part of what is called “The Scout Method” – the methodology employed in our advancement programme to allow for progressive self-education. The patrol system allows scouts to take responsibility under adult guidance and gain skills that will stand them in good stead for later life.
Our three patrols each held patrol camps at Arrowe Park in Benoni from the 20th to the 22nd of April 2018 to allow for our scouts to experience the patrol system in action in the great outdoors and away from the usual Friday night meetings. Under the leadership of their respective Patrol Leaders, who were all completing several requirements for their First Class badges, the other scouts learnt by doings and completed requirements towards their own advancement badges. Our scouts built rafts and enjoyed paddling them on Homestead Lake – a novel experience for some of our newer members. All-in-all, a fantastic time was had by all and all the scouts who attended learnt a lot and, more importantly, had a great time doing it.
